In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulates accessibility at the federal level. It was enacted in 1990 to ensure equal opportunities for people with disabilities in the areas of employment, public services and commercial facilities.

As it was enacted before the Internet became a center of social interaction and information, ADA does not explicitly include web accessibility; however, it endorses that direction and acts as the foundation of additional, more specific U.S. laws and regulations enacted both by the federal government and single states.
