While it is not (and probably will never become so) an official standard, its syntax is very well described, yet allows for enough flexibility to act as a “de-facto” standard for concisely and effectively representing math formulas.
While AsciiMath is very well supported by MathJax and an official AsciiMath parser capable of parsing its syntax and turning it into its MathML equivalent does in deed exist, AsciiMath also shines when having to represent Math formulas in plain text documents.
